"There's no ending," she tells TVGuide.com. "She teaches aerobics at 23 Hour Fitness and we'll see what happens to her."
Sue's sudden career shift comes after she took the hit for her Cheerios co-captain and longtime protégé Becky (Lauren Potter), who brought a gun to McKinley out of fear and accidentally fired it in Sue's office. The incident led to a school-wide panic that left the New Directions hiding in the dark corners of the choir room, crying and filming their final goodbyes for fear that a shooter was attacking McKinley.
Ratings grew 20 percent for the very special episode, but drew some negative reactions from some critics and even parents of children involved in the Sandy Hook Elementary shooting. Andrew Paley, whose two sons survived the December tragedy in Newtown, appeared on CNN the following day and criticized the producers for not giving advance warning of the emotional episode.
Lynch had nothing but praise for Glee co-creator Ryan Murphy. "That's what Ryan does. He takes on everything. He almost sees it as his obligation," the Emmy winner says. "I think he did a great job with it and we put the light on something that needed to have the light put on it. I think it was a very artful episode."
After Coach Sue took the heat for Becky and promptly received her walking papers, fans will get to "C" — see what we did there? — a first glimpse at Sue's new job in Thursday's episode (9/8c on Fox). "She's like a Nazi," Lynch says. "She's the exact same person — maybe meaner."
The same person, except for her signature tracksuit attire, which Sue will trade in for a more retro fashion statement. "We're all wearing our '80s gear," Lynch says of the aerobics class. "Sue was probably at her physical peak in 1985 so that's what she dresses in."
Thursday's episode will also feature a musical performance by Sue of "Little Girls" from Annie. Lynch is starring as Miss Hannigan — coincidentally the same role Lynch's TV mom Carol Burnett played in the 1982 movie — in the latest Broadway production this summer. "Ryan put it in there as an homage to Annie the musical and the fact that I'm going to be in it," she says. "It was very nice of Ryan to do a nice cross-promotion."
Lynch has been hard at work in Los Angeles practicing for her Broadway debut, and is hopeful her Glee cast mates — many of whom got their big breaks on the Great White Way — will be able to see her perform. "I told them I don't want to know when, but I heard it's in the works," she says.
Glee airs Thursdays at 9/8c on Fox. Are you excited to see Coach Sue hit the gym? Do you miss her at McKinley High?
