High Chair Injuries On The Rise

Researchers say high chair injuries have increased by 22%. Donna Terrell takes a look at a recent study on high chair related injuries.

Researchers say high chair injuries have increased by 22%.

This marks the longest and largest study of high chair related injuries in the U.S.

Findings show 90% of children were hurt by falling from a high chair, with concussions being the most common injury.

Gary Smith of Nationwide Children's Hospital led the study and Tracy Mehan serves as manager of translational research at the hospital.

They both explain why these injuries are happening and how to prevent them.

Mehan says, "They're naturally curious, so they are going to grab anything they can have in their sights. So table cloths, placemats, hot cups of coffee, plates of food sharp silverware. All that should be out of reach of a child."

Smith says, "If I were to tell parents what the top three things are they can do to prevent serious injuries from the use of high chairs, it's going to be use the restraint system, use the restraint system, use the restraint system."
