Cancer is one of the greatest healthcare issues facing the United States today. Every year, hundreds of thousands of people are treated for cancer and cancer-related health problems. These treatments are often very costly, contributing to an already inflated healthcare system. Most health insurance companies have adopted a philosophy of preventative care, meaning that they prefer to help policy holders discover and diagnose their condition before it develops into a more costly illness. But, in cases when the cancer is found late, and extensive treatments are required, costs are covered by most health insurers. Each health insurance company is different, though, so the extent of what they cover will vary. Procedures that are regarded as alternative, for example, may be covered by some providers, but not others. For information about your insurance with regard to cancer, contact the insurance comapany's customer service department or your employer's benefits manager.
