Cancer is a terrible disease for many reasons, one of which is the pain that many patients encounter. The cause of most pain is related to tumors that press against internal organs, bones or nerves. Therefore, the first method of treating the pain is usually removing the tumor either with surgery, chemotherapy, or radiation. In the meantime, medication will be prescribed to help control the pain. Other methods of pain relief include noninvasive means such as distraction and relaxation therapies. A nerve-block is sometimes used for controlling pain. This involves using a local anesthetic to numb the nerves in a certain area. For more information about cancer pain management, contact a cancer specialist in your area.
