Pedestrian safety

It's important to teach children safety on the street, especially if they're unsupervised while walking to and from school, or other destinations. First, go over the route (ROOT) the child takes, and make sure it's the safest one possible. The child should understand that this is the only acceptable route to travel, and you should point out any dangers along the way. In addition to teaching safety rules, teach the child never to hitchhike or accept a ride from a stranger. Here are some important rules to emphasize to a child: Whenever it's available, walk on the sidewalk, not in the roadway. If you must walk in the roadway, always walk on the left side of the street, facing the oncoming traffic. If you must walk at night, wear light-colored clothing or reflective material. Obey all traffic signals and signs, as well as instructions from any crossing guard, student safety patrol, or police officer. Cross only at corners or designated crosswalks, and never from between parked cars. At intersections, look both ways before crossing, and keep an eye out for vehicles turning the corner. Be especially careful in bad weather, which also can make it more difficult for a driver to see you.
