Bursitis

Bursitis (ber-SYE-tis) is the inflammation of the bursa, which are fluid-filled cavities in the joints where tendons and muscles pass over bone. The bursa help reduce friction between moving parts, but their inflammation can cause pain and limit movement. Symptoms include pain, tenderness, and swelling in the affected joint. Bursitis can have many causes including arthritis, overuse of the joint, and infections. A chiropractor can help reduce the pain and swelling caused by bursitis. The best treatment is usually rest, so your chiropractor may suggest you wear a brace to immobilize the joint. Ice therapy can help reduce swelling, tenderness, and pain. After the pain and tenderness have gone, your chiropractor may want to do tests to determine why the bursitis occurred. You may have a partial dislocation of the joint, in which case an adjustment can realign the joint and prevent future problems. If the problem is recurrent, you may want to examine your daily activities to determine how you might be overusing the joint. It's best to talk to your chiropractor about your activities and condition before reducing or increasing any physical activity.
