Ear infections-symptoms in children

Young children are far more susceptible to ear infections than adults. This may be due to their smaller eustachian (YOU-STAY-SHE-EN) tubes, which helps the middle ear to drain and allows pressure to equalize. The fact that children's immune systems have not fully developed may be another factor. In any case, most ear infections are characterized by earaches or hearing loss, and possibly even dizziness, nausea, or vomiting. They may occur more frequently when your child has a cold or suffers from allergies. Fortunately, most ear infections respond to antibiotics, although in some cases minor surgery may be required to allow the ear to drain. An ear, nose and throat specialist should be consulted if your child complains of any of these symptoms. The doctor should be able to pinpoint the condition and prescribe proper treatment.
