When sinus problems don't respond to antibiotics, your doctor may recommend endoscopic (END-OH-SCOP-IC) sinus surgery. An endoscope is an instrument that uses the same fiber optic technology that transmits telephone and TV signals, allowing surgeons to see inside the sinuses themselves. Coupled with the precision of laser surgery, this allows surgeons to perform delicate procedures that were previously impossible. The most common procedure is to enlarge the area where sinuses drain into the nose. Once they drain normally, patients generally report an immediate relief from the pressure of sinusitis. If medication is not effective in solving your sinus problems, consult a good ear, nose, and throat doctor about the possibility of endoscopic sinus surgery as a possible alternative.
