Hoarseness may be nature's way of getting back at people who talk too much. Overuse of the voice is among the common causes of this condition. Smoking is another. Air pollution can irritate your throat. The simple solution for all of these is to rest the voice frequently and breathe clean air. A good air cleaner or filter will remove much of the harmful dust and airborne particles in your home. Lozenges can soothe a sore throat, as can cool foods such as cold fluids. Of course, hoarseness can also be a warning sign of a more serious condition, ranging from tonsillitis to throat cancer. To be on the safe side, have an ear, nose and throat specialist look for the underlying cause of your hoarseness.
