Modern surgical techniques have come a long way in recent years. Fiber optics allow ear surgeons to perform delicate operations that would have been unheard of just decades ago. One of the most common procedures is known as myringotomy (MERE-IN-JOT-OH-ME), an operation that involves making a small hole in the eardrum and passing a tube through to drain excess fluid from the middle ear.
