Carbohydrates provide the body with energy and are an essential part of the diet. People with diabetes (die-uh-BEET-eez) should make healthy choices about eating the right kind of carbohydrates. Simple carbohydrates are sugars found in foods like table sugar, honey, or syrup. Since they are converted into glucose rapidly and can cause the blood glucose level to soar, simple carbohydrates should be avoided, but always consult with your health care provider or dietitian on if or how to include them in your diet. Complex carbohydrates are found in breads, fruits, cereals, grains, and vegetables. These foods are a good source of fiber and slow the release of glucose into the bloodstream after a meal. In order to form a meal plan that best suits your nutritional needs, consult with your health care provider.
