Self-confidence is confidence in oneself, one's own abilities. It is the reliance of one's own power to accomplish what's necessary. We gain self-confidence because of our belief in ourselves; the self respect we have for ourselves, in other words our self-esteem. High self-esteem is a positive attitude - even amid the ups and downs of life. Although people with high self-esteem might experience disappointment, a setback would not decrease their image of themselves as valuable, meaningful individuals. On the other hand, if a person is unable to feel internal success, they may look for feelings of success or happiness in external activities such as overeating or depending on others for praise- that is, not feeling successful unless someone else recognizes the success. These external rewards are rarely satisfying without an underlying sense of positive self-regard. That positive self regard and internal success can be yours through exercise. You already know that exercise can improve your health and give you increased energy, but did you also know it can increase your peace of mind, self-esteem, and self-confidence? By beginning a fitness program, you'll improve the way you look and that can release psychological energy for creative projects and personal relationships. And because your outer appearance will match more closely your inner self, you'll like yourself better, which means your self-esteem and self-confidence will increase.
