Parts of braces

The design of different types of braces varies, but each type has similar parts. Braces consist of brackets with varying widths that are bonded to your teeth with composite resin. Strands of metal called archwires may extend from molar to molar or be inserted into the brackets in segments. Bends and loops may be used on the archwires to make them more flexible and achieve a specific type of tooth movement. Elastic ligatures are fastened to the wires to move or anchor teeth in their corrected position. Hooks are attached to the archwire to hold rubber bands. These bands also assist in moving teeth. A system of straps and wires called headgear may be used in conjunction with braces to move or hold teeth in place. Braces now come in many styles and materials and are more fashionable and comfortable than the traditional stainless steel type, which was the only kind of braces available in the past.
