Angina
Angina (anne-JIE-nah) is a painful discomfort that occurs when the muscular wall of the heart becomes temporarily short of oxygen. Coronary (Kore-roe-nare-ree) arteries fail to supply sufficient oxygen to the heart muscle, often resulting from coronary artery disease and high blood pressure.
Congestive heart failure
Congestive heart failure isn't a heart attack, but is the result of damage to the heart muscle often arising from a heart attack, high blood pressure, congenital heart defects, hardening of the arteries, rheumatic fever, or high blood pressure in the lungs resulting from lung disease.
Coronary angioplasty
If you've been diagnosed with coronary artery disease, which is a blocking of one or more of the arteries that nourish the heart, your doctor may recommend coronary angioplasty (an-jee-o-plass-tee).
Coronary artery disease
Coronary artery disease is the progressive narrowing of the coronary arteries, usually due to a build up of fatty plaques along the vessel walls. It's the most common cause of heart disease in the United States.
Coronary bypass surgery
Coronary artery bypass surgery is performed on people suffering from severe coronary artery disease. Coronary artery disease is the result of fatty build-ups on the inside of the arteries that lead to the heart.
Effective treatment of varicose veins
Varicose veins are twisted, bulging, blue veins, occuring most often in the legs. The condition is a result of valves which no longer work properly, allowing blood to flow backward, instead of returning to the heart.
Heart attack risk factors
Your lifestyle may include certain habits or conditions that tend to increase your chance of having a heart attack. These habits or conditions are known as risk factors.
Heart attacks
The most common type of heart attack is caused by a blockage of one of the coronary(KORE-oh-nair-ree) arteries by a blood clot. This cuts off the blood supply to the region of the heart muscle served by the artery, damaging or killing the deprived tissue.
High blood pressure
High blood pressure or hypertension (hi-per-TEN-shun) is a condition in which the arteries constrict and cause the heart to pump harder in order to distribute the blood to the body.
Problems with circulation
The circulatory, or cardiovascular (kard-ee-oh-VAS-kyew-ler), system consists of the heart and blood vessels that pump and circulate blood throughout the body.
Varicose veins
Varicose (vara-KOSE) veins are swollen, bluish (BLUE-ish) veins that occur primarily in the lower legs. They're caused by a weakness in the walls and valves of the veins which allow blood that's being returned to the heart to flow back into the veins.
