The decision to place a family member in a nursing home often brings feelings of grief and remorse. These days, however, the picture is not so grim because homes offer many excellent living and care options to choose from. Depending on your individual needs and preference, options you may wish to consider range from facilities that provide only room and board to those that provide continuous nursing and personal care services. The four basic types of nursing homes that you have to choose from are residential care facilities, continuing care communities, assisted living facilities, and skilled nursing facilities. Residential care facilities provide room and board, and some offer social and recreational programs. Continuing care communities generally include room and board plus personal care, heath care, and social activities. Assisted living facilities include retirement as well as board and care homes. Services range widely from place to place but usually include meals and help with personal care. Skilled nursing facilities provide 24-hour nursing care and supervision with an emphasis on improving and maintaining personal care skills. Remember that the home you choose should be licensed and equipped to offer the level of medical care that's promised. For more information about the different types of nursing home options available, please consult a nursing home in your area.
