Narcotics Anonymous, or NA (N-A), is a program that uses a combination of counseling and group therapy to help people recover from drug abuse. Like similar self-help groups, NA encourages members to admit they have a problem they can't control, and uses a twelve-step program to help guide participants down the road of recovery. Peer support is a critical ingredient in NA. Members usually meet at least once a week, and are paired with buddies they can call on for advice and support if a craving or temptation to relapse threatens to become overwhelming. In addition, group discussions allow participants to share stories and coping strategies, and provide a source of hope and encouragement for new members. The program has successfully helped many substance abusers recover and reclaim their lives, but its effectiveness is largely dependent on the members' personal desire to quit using drugs. Chapters of NA usually meet in local community centers or on college campuses, and warmly welcome new members. For more information, consult a health care professional in your area.
