Liposuction considerations

There are many factors to keep in mind if you're considering liposuction, and it's important to realize the limitations of the procedure. Liposuction is best-suited for treating resistant pockets of fat in people of average or near-average weight with taut, resilient skin. Those who are seriously overweight or have poor skin elasticity may be left with loose folds, indentations, sagging skin, and other undesirable effects. Such persons may require reduction surgery to remove excess skin. Even seemingly 'ideal' candidates may not achieve the outcome they hoped for. Existing stretch marks, cellulite, and rippling usually remain or can sometimes be made worse by liposuction. In addition, you may feel that too much or too little fat was removed. After the procedure, bruising, swelling, and temporary numbness are common. It may take six months to a year before swelling completely resolves. In some cases, pigmentation changes and permanent loss of sensation can occur. Small scars usually remain where the suctioning device was inserted. During recovery, be prepared to take several days off of work and to limit your activities for several months as directed by the doctor. Your final appearance may not be evident until three months or more after the liposuction.
