As people age, it's common to develop deposits of fat in the neck and chin area, which change the once youthful contour. If you have taut, elastic skin in this region, liposuction may be able to re-sculpt the jaw line. Typically, liposuction of the neck and chin works best on patients in their 30s and 40s, whose skin is still resilient enough to return to shape after the excess fat is removed. In such candidates, the procedure may take the place of a lower face-lift. Because this type of liposuction generally involves smaller amounts of fat removal, it's usually done as an outpatient procedure. You may notice results immediately after the procedure, though swelling can make it difficult to judge the outcome until several weeks have passed. About three months following the surgery, your final appearance should be visible. For those who have loose, hanging skin around the neck, liposuction alone probably won't be sufficient to improve the area. Instead, you may also need a neck and face-lift, where muscles and skin are surgically re-positioned and excess skin is removed.
