Before your baby is born, you may want to take a class to learn how to feed and bathe your baby, as well as how to change diapers. After your baby is born, there are things you can do to help your child develop emotionally and to feel more comfortable. Bonding with your child is a crucial first step, and is best begun within the first hour after birth. The mother and father should touch, hold, and care for the baby in this early stage. Siblings should be involved, too. Another important part of baby care is helping your child develop trust in you. Comfort them as soon as possible when they cry. When your baby looks at you, smile back, and when you're feeding, be sure to hold them close. You can help them feel more comfortable by feeding them as soon as they're hungry. Breast-feeding is encouraged, whenever medical and environmental conditions allow. Try other techniques to make them feel relaxed, like singing, humming, or offering a pacifier to relieve tension. One of the most important ways to take care of a baby is to let them know that you love them and enjoy being with them. For more information on baby care, contact a pediatrician.
