Working during pregnancy

For many women, working during pregnancy is a necessity. But how long should a pregnant woman continue working? A woman with an uncomplicated pregnancy and a healthy fetus may continue to work without interruption until the onset of labor, as long as the job presents no potential hazards other than those encountered in normal, daily life. However, a doctor should make a specific recommendation as to whether work can be continued throughout pregnancy. A lot depends on a woman's current health and the type of job she works. Women who have jobs that require them to stand all day should usually modify their activities during the last three months. In general, it's recommended that standing be avoided during late pregnancy. A doctor may also recommend that a woman stop working if the workplace contains environmental hazards, such as exposure to radiation or chemicals. Women with high-risk pregnancies may be advised to engage only in light activity throughout their entire pregnancy. And remember, before you make any decision about working during pregnancy, talk with a health care provider and be realistic about your physical condition and the demands of your job.
