Tile roofs are prized for their attractiveness and durability. They are also heavy, expensive, and fireproof. Clay, concrete, and enameled metal are the three main materials used to make tile roofs. Clay tile has been in use for a long time, and a number of styles have been developed. They are made with a mixture of shale and clay, placed in molds, and then fired. The common half-cylinder mission tile shape is popular throughout the southwest, California, and Florida. Concrete tile is a more recent product, and its shapes resemble more traditional clay tile shapes. The most common are the French and English styles. The French style follows a zig-zag pattern, while the English style is more flat. Enameled steel tiles are also available, but they are most often used on commercial structures. For more information on tile roofs, contact a roofing specialist.
