Death certificates may generally be obtained from the funeral home. They may also be obtained from the county in which the death occurred at the Recorder's Office. You'll generally need multiple copies of a deceased's death certificate if assests are left. Normally, you'll need one for each insurance policy, one for each jointly-held property (both real property and personal such as cars), plus 3 or 4 more copies for other purposes. All copies must be certified. Non-certified copies of death certificates will not be accepted. A nominal fee will generally be charged for each copy. For more information about death certificates, please contact your county Recorder's Office.
