Poisonous substances

To comply with state safety procedures, daycare centers and family daycare homes must demonstrate that they've provided safe storage for all poisonous substances. Most state regulations require cleaning chemicals to be stored in a locked cabinet, separate from all food. Harmful substance storage regulations aren't limited strictly to cleaning chemicals, but may include medicines, vitamins, and some craft supplies. Diligent (dill-ih-jent) care givers must be careful not to leave these substances within children's reach at any time. When touring a center or home, ask to see where harmful products are stored. Keep in mind that storing these items above a child's head isn't sufficient. The cabinet or storage area should also be enclosed and have a child-proof latch for it to be suitable for storing poisonous substances. Don't forget to inquire where the number to poison control is posted. It should be clearly displayed near the phone.
