Cause Of Death Release In UA Student Accident

Corner release cause of death in boating accident that killed two U of A students last week.
TULSA, OK - The state medical examiner released the causes of death Friday of the two people killed earlier this week in a boating accident on Grand Lake.

Amy Elliot, chief administrative officer for the ME's office, says Rachel Swetnam died of blunt force trauma of the head and neck while William "Trey" Varner III died of blunt force trauma to the head.

Both manners of death are listed as accidental. Autopsy and toxicology reports are pending.

Swetnam and Varner were on a ski boat with six other people when it crashed into a docked houseboat Tuesday evening. They were at the head of the boat when it crashed.

Grand River Dam Authority investigators believe alcohol and speed may have been contributing factors in the crash, though few other details have been released and the investigation is ongoing.

Close friends have suggested a second boat may have been involved and the two were racing before the crash.

Upon completion, the investigation will be submitted to the Delaware County District Attorney's Office for review.
