SALINE COUNTY, AR – Officers from the Saline County Sheriff’s Office arrested two men under suspicion of using counterfeit money, authorities say.

On March 23, 2011, two men reportedly used a counterfeit $100 bill at Springlake Baptist Church yard sale.

After the men were given change and left, one of the workers suspected the bill was counterfeit and notified the Sheriff’s Office, giving a description of the subjects and the vehicle they were driving.

Deputies later stopped the suspect vehicle, made contact with the two men, later identified as 23-year-old Leeland Gideon and 22-year-old James Gideon, both of Saline County, and took them into custody. Deputies found a wallet containing twelve counterfeit $100 bills, along with a loaded pistol.

The Saline County Sheriff’s Office and Secret Service Agents served a search warrant at one of the suspect’s residence, where they found counterfeiting material. When they were questioned, both suspects admitted to printing and passing counterfeit bills in Saline, Pulaski, and Faulkner Counties to at least six other businesses.

Leeland Gideon was arrested on counts of forgery, possession of a controlled substance, cruelty to animals and possession of a forgery device, while James Gideon was arrested on counts of felon in possession of a firearm, forgery, possession of a controlled substance, cruelty to animals and possession of a forgery device.

The process the suspects were using defeated the standard “pen” test most business’ use to determine if a bill is counterfeit. The Saline County Sheriff’s Office is advising all business to look for the water mark and security strip in the bills to make sure they match.

The best way to catch these bills will be to hold the bill in front of a small black light. The suspects told Detectives when they were passing bills; if they saw a black light at the register they would not pass the counterfeit money there.
