Craighead Co. Couple Charged after Death of Infant Son

Sidney Campbell, 36, is charged with first-degree murder, and his wife, 30-year-old Jennifer, faces a felony charge of hindering apprehension.
BROOKLAND, AR -- A man and his wife have been arrested after the death of their infant son.

Sidney Campbell, 36, is charged with first-degree murder, and his wife, 30-year-old Jennifer, faces a felony charge of hindering apprehension.

According to a Brookland Police report, officers responded at 7:47 Sunday morning to a call of a 1-month-old baby who was not breathing. First responders examined the boy and determined that he had already died.

Sidney and Jennifer told police that they woke up and found him that way, but an autopsy revealed that the boy died of skull fractures consistent with blunt force trauma, according to a probable cause affidavit released out of Craighead County.

According to the affidavit, Sidney Campbell told investigators that he fell asleep while holding the baby around midnight, and woke up with the boy still in his arms, gave him some gas medicine and put him back to bed.

After the investigator told him his story did not match the medical examiner's report, Campbell changed his story several times, eventually saying he fell asleep and doesn't know what happened from the time he fed the baby until he woke up in the chair the next morning, according to the affidavit.

Jennifer Campbell admitted to investigators that she made up the story about finding the baby in the bed, and told Sidney that would be what they told police, the affidavit states.

Sidney and Jennifer Campbell were taken to Craighead County Jail on charges of first-degree murder and felony hindering apprehension, respectively.
