Deal or Dud: Shamwow

After nearly four weeks it has finally arrived. We received more than one hundred emails from viewers asking us to put the Shamwow to the test.
After nearly four weeks it has finally arrived. We received more than one hundred emails from viewers asking us to put the Shamwow to the test.

Commercial says: "You'll be saying wow every time you use the Shamwow."

The commercial is catchy, the pitchman annoying.

Commercial says: "Shamwow holds 20 times its weight in liquid. Look at this. It just does the work. Doesn't drip.  Made in Germany. You know Germans make good stuff."

To find out if it’s a Deal or a Dud we got Heather and DC of Alice 107.7 to give it a go.  Our first test was a mini-Shamwow and a wet table.

"aaaaaaaaaand... no no no....sopping wet mess right there." Kevin: "You're not feeling it?” Heather: “No. Pretty much sham stinks right now."

The commercial shows the Shamwow absorbing spilt soda off the top of carpet. And even from underneath it.

Commercial says: "No other towel is going to do that. It acts like a vacuum and look at this, virtually dry on the bottom."

But before we can do that test I notice a missing ingredient that could affect the outcome of our Deal or Dud test.

"I think I figured out what the problem is. You're missing the key element from the commercial. The headset,” Kevin said.

With perfect conditions, we pour the soda on the carpet and let it soak through. Using the big Shamwow, Heather gets to work.  The soda on top of the carpet is gone. But underneath we have a big wet Pepsi mess.

But what about the claim that the Shamwow can hold 20 times its weight in liquid?

"Finally.... finally.... it does something it is supposed to," Heather said.

The Shamwow is so super absorbent that according to some blogs on the internet Olympic divers and swimmers use them to dry off.  So we asked Heather if she knew anyone who might be willing to test that claim?

"As a matter of fact, I do. His name is Pool Boy."

Armed with his swimming cap and Speedo, Heather and DC’s side kick Pool Boy took an Olympic dip in a nearby pond. In record time he's out and DC springs into action with the Shamwow.

"I have to say with all the failures we've had with the Shamwow... this is probably a positive. It will dry a human body."

But is this super soaker upper a Deal or a Dud? Time for our panel of judges to weigh in.

"We're gonna have to say, it's definitely a dud," Pool Boy said.

If you think the Shamwow will work for you it will cost you $19.95.
