EZ Mart murder court case delayed

The mother of the North Little Rock EZ Mart clerk shot and killed in September says she's frustrated with how the case is being handled.

The three men arrested and charged with her daughter's murder were scheduled to appear in court Wednesday morning, but that didn't happen.

It's been 8 weeks since Maria Currie lost her daughter, 29-year-old Akiya Egeston, a wife and mother of two who worked at the EZ Mart in North Little Rock.

Police say three men came in attempting to rob the store and shot Egeston, killing her. Maria Currie says she misses her daughter everyday. "I'm used to talking to her several times a day, so that's been hard."

All Currie has left are pictures and memories, and a desire to see justice done. "They have to suffer the consequences. They took my grandson's mother away from them. It's hard to look at them and not explain why."

Currie drove 13 hours from Joliet, IL to come back to town to see how the court case is progressing. The three men accused are Jacobi Robinson, Davion Howard, and Machlin Rogers. They did not appear in court Wednesday as Currie expected. Apparently, the prosecutor needs more time to file the case with the circuit court.

Currie says she's disappointed and frustrated she came all this way, but says it's not for nothing. "To make sure the boys are taken care of the way she wanted them to be, because they were her life."

Currie says she won't be comfortable until the court case is closed. Maybe then she says she and the rest of the family will be able to move on. In the meantime, Currie says they are just trying to hang in there. "Take it one day at a time. I just want justice to be served and to be able to get passed this part."

Currie says she doesn't have any ill feelings toward the suspects’ families. She knows they too, are suffering. Currie says the three men aren't bad people, they just made bad decisions.

Victim's coordinators are typically assigned and are responsible for keeping families in the loop with court cases like this. It's unclear why that didn't happen in this particular situation.
