For Sale Signs Line Neighborhood On Oil Spill One-Month Anniversary

Activists have planned a rally in Mayflower for Monday to mark the one-month anniversary of an oil spill that's left parts of the community in shambles. MAYFLOWER, AR -- Activists have planned a rally in Mayflower for Monday to mark the one-month anniversary of an oil spill that's left parts of the community in shambles.

"For sale" signs are popping up like spring flowers in the Northwoods subdivision, where the spill originated, while ExxonMobil workers suck up and scrub away remaining oil.

Tarred storm drains have been removed from the ground and new ones sit in front yards waiting to be buried.

Several realtors listing homes in Northwoods said Sunday selling is slow going so far.

Buyers are timid and offering low, realtors say.  Homeowners are wary over the details of Exxon's promise to guarantee sales.

"The people that's lost their homes... it's just terrible," said Mayflower resident Winni Gibson.

Outside Northwoods there's sympathy for those most affected but also a feeling that progress is being made.

"The smells gone... they've been working hard at it," said Peggy Richeson who was getting into her car at a Mayflower grocery store.

"ExxonMobil has bent over backwards, in my opinion, to make this as easy and financially smooth as they could," said Mayflower Alderman Will Elder.

He said prospects are looking up, but one month later he still looks back in awe at how the city of Mayflower has become the focus of so many.

"You'd kind of like for your town to get national attention in a more positive manner," he said.

Organizers said the Monday rally will be held at 6:00 p.m. at a park next to Mayflower City Hall.

It will feature speeches by homeowners from Northwoods and some environmental activists.

ExxonMobil is promising to release an update on cleanup efforts.
