LITTLE ROCK, AR - One man is dead after a house burned in southwest Little Rock. Three others who were in the home at the time were able to escape.
The fire at 8715 Verbena Drive was called in by multiple neighbors who saw the flames.
"I almost didn't make it out myself. I couldn't breathe," said Doris Usifo, who escaped the fire.
Jumping out the first floor window is the only way Doris Usifo and her fiance could get out of their burning home.
But two more people -- her son and nephew -- lay asleep upstairs.
"I was calling their names 'Kendrick, Randen, jump out! The house is on fire.' No one was saying anything. They were still up there," Usifo said.
Kendrick heard his mom's screams, and he jumped out of a window, too.
Randen didn't make it.
"He never jumped out and they said they found him at the end of the bed trying to make it down the stairs," Usifo said.
Her 30-year-old nephew Randen Hayes, who'd just moved in three weeks ago, is now dead.
Just hours before, the two of them made plans to go shopping.
"I just wished the Lord would have taken my life instead of his. I've lived my life and it hasn't been a bad one," Usifo said.
A holiday season, now memorable in a tragic way.
"I'll never be the same, I'll never be the same after this. Never," Usifo said.
