NORTH LITTLE ROCK, AR – North Little Rock High School student Jasmine Simone Young was shot to death Wednesday night while sitting in the back seat of a white Tahoe on Asher Ave.
Thursday, her friends were dealing with the loss.
“I’ll remember her always and joy and peace because that is what she was, a peacemaker,” said her friend Verronica Williams.
“[I’m] just trying to accept the fact that my best friend is gone. That’s not something you want to hear, but that is life,” said Miranda Gilliam
Sitting with Jasmine in the back seat was another NLR High School student, Sydney Blocker. Blocker was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries and is currently recovering at home from her gunshot wounds.
The school is working with students and is in contact with both families to provide support.
“I feel a personal loss every time I lose one of my children from here,” says Steve Canady, a North Little Rock Safety Officer. “Every time a child dies needlessly, senselessly, and tragically, it is a horrible, horrible thing.”
Two men were also in the Tahoe with the 17-year-old high school girls. Kyron Richardson, 19, and James Burks IV, 20. According to the police report, the four were at the Site Gas Station on Asher Ave when, according to an employee, several people started firing guns at each other.
Parents and students say Jasmine’s death should serve as a warning for others.
“You should be safe where ever you are if you're in your car minding your own business, but like they say, there are two sides of the story. Unfortunately, we'll never know the other half,” says Jennifer Woodward, a parent at the school.
Williams agrees. “Watch who you hang out with, watch your surroundings, let somebody know where you are what you're doing always and keep your guard up.”
Williams and Gilliam say they have no idea what the group was doing at the gas station or who would want to hurt them. The police report lists two suspect vehicles, one an unknown gold colored car, the other a red Nissan.
