LITTLE ROCK, AR - Conway police officer William McGary died shortly after 5pm Friday from injuries sustained when he was hit by a car while directing traffic.

The Conway Police Department asks for you to keep the family in your prayers:

CPD has spent the past day with the McGary family, they are very proud that he was a member of the Conway Police Department and appreciative of all the outpouring of support. The presence of all the officers and other members of our agency has helped them through this difficult time. Please continue to offer them love and support in the days ahead.

McGary was hit on Dave Ward Drive just before 8pm on Thursday. He was flown to Baptist in Little Rock for treatment. The man police say hit him, Barry Strickland, was arrested on scene and charged with DWI-drugs, first degree battery, and other related traffic offenses. Right now, it is unclear whether charges will be upgraded.

The department's facebook page continues to be flooded with well-wishes for the family.

Financial contributions can be made to the Martin McDaniel FOP. Please contact Pam Sweeney at 501-450-6199.

Mike...Agree. I hope that if in fact his job sent him home, knowing he was under the influence....A civil lawsuit can be filed. You don't let a man or woman drive under the influence....Especially if they ask for a ride home. Hold employer some kind of accountability as well.

I understand it has come to light that the person responsible for the officer's death was a veteran. As a fellow war veteran of Iraq I understand and appreciate what the young man has done but this does not give him a license to kill. He consciously took the medicine knowing it impaired him and still decided to drive. There is no one or thing to blame besides the young man who drove into the officer. it is disturbing that some people are trying to turn the police officer from the victim into the offender. The police officer was contributing just as much to society and his community as any veteran of the military. He put his life on the line for his community and paid the ultimate price. Just because he wasn't chasing down a bank robber or investigating a murder doesn't mean he died any less honorably. Working traffic accidents are extremely dangerous. As for those who use the argument " we all make mistakes don't judge" you are right everyone here probably has broken the law at some point in his or her life. That doesn't justify what the guy did. There are plenty of criminals in prison who have served in the military. Military service does not mean you are above the law.

Yes that is what the other news said. I know several police up close and personal also. Will not give up their names. No snitch here. My client relationships I will not talk about either. And that is what my bottle says. I read it after your comment. I'll not take another. I have to be able to drive. I couldn't live with the death of another. If the pain gets to bad I'll just have to hand in my license. It's the only script I take that has that on it.

Sorry yall. I'm using a touch screen phone that kinda had a mind of its own. But...Yall get what I was saying in last post. No matter what.... This is devestating, heartbreaking. This young officers death was a result of somebody being being the wheel of their vehicle while under influence of drugs. Tell me if I'm wrong but...Doesn't this mean....this officer was killed with a lethal weapon. I think so...Simply by driving a car while under the influence, you put your life as well as others lives at risk. So sad for officers family. : (

May cause drowsiness. Not Will cause drowsiness. Are you sure that is what he was on? Mapleman; Butch is right, booze is a drug. So is coffee, aspirin, most soda's and candy, etc. Not a very good employer if the man asked for a ride home and they didn't give him one. Should have called family or a cab if he thought he couldn't drive. Prayers for all involved.

Mapleman alcohol is a drug. In any world you live in. So quit looking down on one and not the other. It's the field I work in. Lots of experience with it. Including personal.

Well he did the wrong thing. What was he taking. Clonazepam. Closet junkie pills. I know lots of people on them with a script. Including a minister, my sister in law, daughter, and about 50 others I work with. All have cars and drive. Prescribed by doctors for real problems. Now what I wonder is if I need to turn in mine because I take several scripts. Haven't had an accident in 25 years. But if I did would I have this to look forward to. Think about how many more are out there with a script for it. Driving. Life gits harder every day. He didn't do the right thing. Bottom line. Pay the price. My bottle says use caution while driving or operating machinery. May cause drousness . Can't spell it. Maybe doctors should give the names of the people on it to the people that issue licenses. So sorry for him, the department, and family. I really think this guy was eating them like candy.

One, the officer was wearing a yellow reflective vest, when he was hit, however, the individual was impaired so it really does not matter what the officer was wearing because the impaired driver was out of control. Second, Just because this individual is a veteran with problems is NO excuse! And the law is clear no one under the influence, being alcohol, legal or illegal drugs is allowed to drive. The only victim here is the officer who died in the line of duty, not the killer, yes killer who killed him. It was involuntary, but no mistake about it, Barry Strickland killed that officer. He should and will pay a price for that. But just because this Strickland was a vet and had PTSD, should we excuse him? What if he shot up a school or his work place, oh, it was PTSD, he's a good guy and veteran, we should go easy on him. Please! There is only one victim here.

before anyone makes judgement on the one who hit the cop must get your info correct... Barry Strickland is a Veteran of Iraq with a lot of problems wit PTSD and takes a ton of prescription drugs for anxiety and sleep problems.. he has seen a lot of things most of us will never see in our life time over in Iraq. Barry was at work before this accident happen and was sent home by a supervisor.. barry did ask for someone to take him home and apparently no one took him up on that offer and now all this happens.. so people need to get their fact before you make a comment about someone you do not know
