PINE BLUFF, AR -- The owner of a Pine Bluff gospel radio station is recovering after being shot in his hometown of Helena while trying to help a man he saw lying along a street.
Police call Monday's incident a staged robbery attempt.
Investigators say Elijah Mondy and his wife noticed a man lying on the street as they drove past him. They turned around to see if he needed help.
When the couple went back to the scene, investigators said the man approached the car and then two other men appeared who were armed with guns.
Mondy, the owner of Praise 1340, remains hospitalized in Memphis. His friends and employees are praying for a speedy recovery.
"To think we have that kind of thing like that on the streets in America is just very disheartening," said Alfred Carroll, a friend of Mondy's.
Mondy's wife was not hurt. Police have arrested suspects and have charged them with first degree battery and attempted aggravated robbery charges.
