Pit Bull Registration Deadline Getting Closer

The battle between pit bull owners and those wanting tougher restrictions on the dog breed continues. Several communities including Beebe, Lonoke, Jacksonville and North Little Rock all have city ordinances enforcing restrictions on pit bulls. But the city of Little Rock is trying something different. It requires pit bull owners to register their dogs, or face losing the animals or paying fines.

Owners have only registered a handful of the estimated thousands of pit bulls in the city and they have until May 21st to avoid any penalties.

Tarlease Pennister got her female pit bull Trinity and her male Chico just a few months ago. She says in a dangerous neighborhood like hers, they help protect her. But Tarlese says coughing up $150 to register each dog plus the $100 it takes to spay and neuter each pet and the $25 for the tracking microchips the city requires is a tough task.

"I don't have the money, but to keep my dogs I will do it," Pennington told us.

So far only 52 of the estimated 2,000 or 3,000 pit bulls in the city are registered. But Tracy Roark with Little Rock Animal Services says the department is getting the word out sending notices with city water bills so pit bull owners know what's required of them. And the Central Arkansas Rescue effort for animals is providing financial relief, reduced cost sterilizations.

There's a long way to go but Roark says the pace of registration is picking up. Roark estimates there have been 25 or 30 pit bull bites in the city already this year.

While the true dog lovers don't feel their pets are a threat, they'll do whatever it takes to keep them. The Little Rock Animal Village is offering Saturday hours for the next couple of weeks so you can get your pit bull registered if you don't have time throughout the week.

My pit bull was the 2nd to be registered, and a few weeks later I had my boxer/lab mix chipped and registered because they say he looks too pittish. But I have a feeling the 52 dogs or so that are registered are about all that are going to do it. I have talked to a lot of people that say they refuse, so good luck enforcing it, just like the no chain law. There is a house up the street from me with a 4 foot chainlink fence and 3 dogs chained up in side it. A few people in the neighborhood call about it all the time because the 2 females go in heat and all the strays in little rock come around. Why can't they make this guy comply? He can't leave the dogs untied or they jump the fence, so he needs to have them taken away. They just keep reproducing, this time one of them mated with its brother who is chained up too, but can still reach her! How about a mandatory spay neuter of all dogs who aren't registerd w/ AKC/UKC?

Having a pit bull ban just goes w/ all the other dumb laws here in the United States. A law is only as good as the enforcement, if the powers that be are really as concerned as they make believe, then they would obviously be pushing harder for the enforcement of the current dangerous dog laws on the books. If pit bull owners can unite and start actually voting for more knowlegdable city leaders that will judge and rule fairly when it come to dog laws then nothing will ever change and this witch hunt will continue. I think when individulas are running for office some of the questions asked should be be thier stand on BSL and then let the people vote from that point on who they want to represent them in office.

You know I would not have a problem with this registration if it applied to all dog owners, but being that it only applies to pitbull owners I find it highly discriminatory. Where does this city get off penalizing all responsible pitbull owners for the irresponsible actions of a few. What about all the other breeds of dogs that have been involved in vicious attacks that go unreported by the media? I don't see any other breed targeted here. When will you ignorant people learn that breed bans do not deal with the problem of irresponsible dog owners. Maybe this city needs to spend some of the hard earned cash they have 'stolen' from responsible pit bull owners and pay an Animal Behaviorist to teach them some facts surrounding canine aggression before enforcing stupid and biased laws that will not make our streets any safer.
