CENTERVILLE, Ark. (AP) - A head-on collision killed five people, including two young brothers, and injured three other children in western Arkansas after a car crossed into oncoming traffic, authorities said Monday.

Arkansas State Police said a car driven by 28-year-old Joey Nichols crossed the center line of Arkansas Highway 7 near Centerville on Sunday afternoon before striking a car driven by Clara Meriweather, who had five children in her vehicle. Road conditions were dry and the weather was clear at the time of the crash, according to the police accident report.

Meriweather, 56, was pronounced dead at the scene, along with 13-year-old Jesse Meriweather and Nichols' passenger, 24-year-old Jessica Nichols. Joey Nichols later died at a hospital, as did 12-year-old Robert Meriweather, police said.

Three other children in Meriweather's vehicle were injured but in good condition Monday morning at Arkansas Children's Hospital, hospital officials said. Their names haven't been released.

Arkansas State Police spokesman Bill Sadler declined to release other details about the crash or the relationships of the victims, citing the ongoing investigation.

The two Meriweather boys who died were brothers and attended Jessieville Middle School, principal Janis Bremer said. Bremer said she didn't know how they were related to the three children injured in the crash.

Grief counselors were at the school Monday. Jesse was in 7th grade and Robert was in 6th grade, and both boys were good students, Bremer said. She said Robert was part of the school's gifted and talented program.

"They were outstanding young men," Bremer said.

The other three boys who were hurt in the collision went to school in Plainview, which is more than 30 miles north of Jessieville, elementary school principal David Minnie said. It wasn't clear whether they were related.

"Our prayers are with them and go out to them and their families," Minnie said.

I tutored young Jessie last year, He was such a sweet nice young man I am devastated today to learn that he is listed among the dead. My sympathies to the family whose grief I am sure is beyond measure.

muffmuff26, the families of all of these people are definitely in my thoughts and prayers. You are so correct, losing a loved one is a very difficult thing to have to deal with, especially when it does involve people of such a young age. I have had to go through this on a few occasions and it isnt easy, but faith will keep you strong. Just remember that everything happens for a reason and God has a plan for us all, even if at times like this you ask "why". This is in His plan and as sad as it is, it happened because it was suppose to. That along with a lot of other things have helped me deal with losing loved ones in the past. Again, my heart aches for you and the families of the others involved, and it will get easier as time passes. Celebrate the life of the ones you've lost, as they would not want you to be sad. Remember all of the laughs shared and all of the memories made and know that one day, you'll be reunited in a better place. :-)

Please keep our family in your thoughts and prayers. Loss of a loved one is hard, but when it involves such a young life, its beyond comparison.

Please keep our family in your thoughts and prayers - losing any member is hard enough, but to lose such young lives is painful beyond comparison.

So sad. One of the other websites said that out of 8 people either killed or injured in this accident, only 1 was wearing a seatbelt. Thoughts and prayers to the families. =(
