LITTLE ROCK, AR - State police say a Texas man shot and killed himself after a short chase on Interstate 40 Thursday night.

Troopers responded to a report of a vehicle traveling westbound from West Memphis with the driver brandishing a firearm. They say they stopped the vehicle outside of Forrest City but the driver fled as they approached the car.

According to Bill Sadler with the Arkansas State Police, troopers pursued the vehicle to just east of the Palestine exit where the sports-car suddenly stopped.

Troopers say they approached the car and found the driver, who was the only occupant of the car, dead of what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The driver has been identified as 60-year-old Rex Lee McCollum of Grapevine, Texas.

A handgun was recovered from the car. The body has been sent to the State Crime Laboratory for examination.

Maybe he was mentally ill. If that's the case you might as well kill yourself in Ar. as the mental health system is a joke. It is sad to think how many sit in judgement on this and don't have any more facts than they have given. Leave judgement to GOD as ONLY HE knows the truth. If the man was sick would a just GOD send him to Hell? Better study the BOOK instead of just listening to some man's judgement on suicide.

Maybe he was already living in hell here in this world. I have met people who through no fault of their own suffer every day of their life. One thing is clear. The state trooper is lucky because any person willing to take their own life is also willing to take the life of another. Better to have a gun aimed at you by a criminal than a suicidal wretch like this with nothing to live for. Heaven and Hell have little meaning for a person in this black hole. They wake up every day wondering if they will still be on this planet when the sun sets. This man didn't make it. I hope their was another somewhere who did...one more day.

Think about where this man's soul is, Hell. He had no time to repent because he took his own life, which wasn't his to take in the first place. What makes people think that they can live any kind of way they want to and think they have keys to heaven when they die? Jesus was torchered, imprisoned, and nailed to a cross to make us sinfree, to save us from Hell, where the demons torcher the souls that go there. He tells us to choose Life or Death. Sinners are not better than Jesus, that they can die in sin and then go to heaven.

DILLIGAF - It states "the driver fled as they approached the car." not on foot.

the only 'good' thing about this bad situation is he didn't kill the trooper first.

What is so terrible in anyone's life that they feel a need to kill themselves? They are choosing a permanent solution, to fix a temporary problem. Sadly it happens more than we ever hear about. Nothing, in my opinion, is worth taking your own life.

I think what they're trying to say is he stopped, they approached the car, and he took off IN the car, and the pursuit resumed.
