CONWAY, AR – A 22-month-old boy drown in a Conway apartment complex pool Friday afternoon. Conway Police say that a 3-year-old boy was also in the pool with the 2-year-old and had to be rescued.

The woman who was supposed to be watching the children, 26-year-old Mekayla Mitchell, tells police she fell asleep and they must have left the apartment at that time. Police say Mitchell is the mother of the 3-year-old and the girlfriend of the father of the toddler.

According to police, the maintenance man at the Westbury Park Apartments noticed the children in the pool. He called for help and the apartment manager dove into the pool and pulled the two out. The manager gave the toddler CPR until medics arrived. He was taken to Conway Regional Hospital where he later died.

The 3-year-old “was shaken up but seemed to be physically fine” according to police.

The investigation is ongoing.

@ arkgal7...I fully agree with you, that was my question. Is the pool gated and how did these babies go or get into a gated pool. If this pool is not secure then yes there can be several charges as well a big lawsuit. @ Protector20..yes we sure are. What is the same hell was this woman thinking by falling alseep while watching these babies. Sad situation and the family has my prayers. Wonder if this woman can sleep now knowing that her sleeping caused a childs death. Sleep with that on your heart.

This is so heartbreaking! I'm just wondering how often she sleeps at noon while watching two small children...

I feel sorry for the family and she should have never fallen asleep while watching 2 children. Isn't it the apartment complexes responsiblity to have the proper gates and locks that prevent children from gaining access to a restricted area such as a swimming pool? Most communities have a lock that is up high that children would have to reach through and pull up on while pushing on the gate at the same time. The health department comes and does random checks of apartment communities and one of the things they look for is to make sure that the gates automatically close behind each person that enters and that it locks. It sounds to me that the apartment community could be liable also. Praying for all of those involved.

The girlfriend went to sleep while watching her boyfriend's child? It's going to be some "Baby Mama" drama.
