LITTLE ROCK, AR - "I think that it's time to stop being scared and to stop being silent for things we, that we didn't cause," said a woman before stopping to compose herself. She filed suit against the Little Rock Catholic Diocese Wednesday, saying Father Charles Kanu sexually abused and exploited her when she went to him for counseling.

She spoke to the media but did not reveal her name.

"I do feel very strongly that there are other women out there that have suffered by his hand, and I hope that in my courage to come forward that it is ok and that there is healing to be found," she said.

The woman claims Father Kanu sexually abused her between 2009 and 2010 while counseling her. She thinks Kanu is now in Nigeria so the defendant in her lawsuit is Bishop Anthony Taylor, the highest ranking authority at the Catholic Diocese.

No one from the Diocese was willing to go on camera with Fox16 when we asked, but they did give us a copy of a statement issued in January, saying allegations of professional misconduct against Father Kanu are credible. The statement doesn't give any specifics about the misconduct.

The woman who filed suit is seeking in excess of $5 million in damages.

According to a spokesperson inside the Diocese, Father Kanu has been suspended and removed as a priest pending further investigation.

Both committed a sin, his being even worse as he took vows---but sue for big bucks??!!! Seems this woman would be more concerned with asking God for forgiveness and let God take care of Father Charles soul. She seems suspicious in her actions. I think it was consensual and they were caught with their hands in the cookie jar!!! He was sent back to Nigeria and now she needs someone else to pay her bills.

I am with a lot of these posters, why in the world would she wait so long to report it. Excuse me but why didn't she report it the first time it happened and not let it go on for over a year. Something is fisher about this. She will be paid so that this can go away.

This lady allowed this priest to get this close to her and then to let him continue to sexually abuse her for a long period of time. I have a heart for anyone that has been abused in anyway. I can't understand, why did she let this go on for so long??? I think she may have wanted more and when the priest called it off, she decided to come out and say he sexually abused her. Stop running to all of these people for counseling, when all you have to do is ask God..

uss is right on the money, this was probably consentual and coming out this late is mearly a ploy for money. Too bad the courts have to burn up the expenses and court time on this. Why don't people just get a job and work for a living?

Many churhes have these same issues, some even a larger % based on the number of members. The Catholic church being so large in the number of members just seems to have more of an issue. Some churches have more of a problem of the priest having affairs with members. Men & women of God are men & women FIRST. Everyone has to stop & look at what is happening in any situation, decide if it is right or wrong, then take action to protect themselves. If this priest was known to have taken advantage before then the church was wrong to leave him in power, if they had no knowledge then I see a limited liability. Only the parties involved know exactly what happened.

This looks to me more like a get rich quick scheme than anything. And truth be known, that's probably what it is.
