40 Displaced, One Killed in Jonesboro Apartment Fire

JONESBORO, AR - One person is reported killed and more than 40 others are displaced following a fire at an apartment building for the elderly.

The blaze broke out at the Aspen Garden Apartments on Raines St. Monday afternoon.

The American Red Cross in Little Rock says disaster responders from the American Red Cross Northeast Arkansas Chapter are providing emergency shelter from the heat for the affected residents.

A Red Cross emergency shelter has been opened to provide comfort to residents from the heat at the
International Studies School, 1218 Cobb Street.

Red Cross Mental Health Responders are also on the scene to provide needed emotional support to those displaced by the fire, as well as their family members.

Disaster Responders will meet individually with residents for immediate emergency needs resulting from loss from the fire. Red Cross damage assessment will begin when safe to do so. The three story building has more than 50 apartments.
