Red Cross Disaster Responders provided close to 90 Red Cross clean up kits, 48 of them in Forrest City, to residents in the three counties working to clean up after as much as 8” of runoff filled homes as torrential rains caused water ways and city streets to overflow. The clean-up kits include a broom, mop, disinfectant and sponges. Bug spray, work gloves and bottled water was also provided to disaster victims.
“We continue to make damage assessments in Woodruff County,” stated Williams. “As of today, we show 80 homes that received some water across the three affected counties, with 5 homes experiencing major damage due to more than 3 feet of water inside homes near Brinkley in Monroe County.” One home in Woodruff County was destroyed during Sunday’s storm by lightning strike that caused a fire.
The Mid-South Chapter of the American Red Cross in Memphis, provided disaster relief and care in West Memphis (Crittenden County) to 15 residents after water flooded an apartment complex.
“According to the National Weather Service as much as 13” of rain drenched areas eastern Arkansas and western Tennessee, from Forrest City to Memphis Sunday,’ stated American Red Cross in Arkansas Communications Officer Brigette Williams. “Numerous flash flood watches were issued across the state starting Saturday, June 28th continuing overnight through Sunday evening not only affecting residents, but travelers on the busy Interstate 40.”
This weekend’s floods are a reminder for Arkansans to stay prepared for the unexpected. “Flash floods happen as they are called, within minutes, so time is critical for safety of people and property’ stated Williams. The American Red Cross has a free preparedness Flood app for smartphones that can be with you at all times to keep you informed on flood readiness.
The Red Cross Flood app for Android, IPhone or IPads can be downloaded at no cost. In addition to preparedness tips, alerts for flood and flash flood watches and warnings can be received from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).
