Benton Officers on Patrol at Apartment Complex Nab DWI Suspect
Trey Hesselbein, 19, of Benton.
BENTON, AR - A local man is in jail and facing a string of charges after police officers patrolling an apartment complex stop him from leaving after he allegedly hit four parked cars.
It happened Tuesday night around 10:30 at the Dogwood Lakes Apartments.
The officers had been patrolling on foot there because of recent criminal activity in the area.
Police say the officers went to see what was going on after they heard loud noises from behind one of the complex buildings. That's when they encountered a vehicle speeding through the parking lot.
Officers were able to stop the vehicle before it left the property after the driver at first refused to stop. According to the police report, Trey Hesselbein, 19, of Benton, was behind the wheel.
At first, Hesselbein wouldn’t cooperate with officers who asked him to get out of his vehicle, according to police. He was eventually removed from the vehicle and arrested after a short scuffle with officers.
Further investigation revealed that four vehicles had been damaged in front of one of the apartment buildings where officers first heard loud noises. Based on damage to Hesselbein’s vehicle and witness statements, it was determined that he was responsible for damaging the vehicles just before making contact with officers. Damage to the victim’s four vehicles is estimated at $10,000.
Hesselbein is charged with 1 felony count of Criminal Mischief, 3 misdemeanor counts of Criminal Mischief, 4 counts of Leaving the Scene of an Accident, Careless Driving, DWI, Refusal to Submit to Chemical Test, Possession of a Controlled Substance (marijuana), Terroristic Threatening, Disorderly Conduct, and Resisting Arrest.
