Cannabis Education radio program and the group Law Enforcement Against Prohibition (LEAP) held a Cannabis Education event held at the Clinton School Auditorium.
The event featured a former border patrol agent who argued the current war on drugs is failing.
Terry Nelson says, "We want legalized drugs so we can regulate who can manufacture and produce them, the purity of them."
Nelson argues that legalizing drugs could reduce crime, return billions in tax dollars and help save lives.
The Van Buren County Sheriff's Office opposes legalizing all drugs.
"I don't want anyone to think our community supports this program cause the calls I got were definitely not in support," says Sheriff Scott Bradley.
The sheriff says people called their office upset over the meeting location and subject. He also shared that fighting crime is a major priority in the county and most criminal offenses are often related to drugs.
Organizers say they don't support hard drug use but want to end drug-related violence. About a dozen people showed up to support the event.
