FAYETTEVILLE, AR -- A former Razorback football player is facing a charge of second-degree murder.

When officers showed up after being called by Joshua Melton, they found him sitting on the curb crying.

And when officers went inside Melton's home they say they found Michael Gover dead.

Melton told police he and Gover had been drinking.

But when Gover threw up on the floor, they got into a fight.

Melton told police he hit Gover several times and went to bed after he looked unconscious.

It wasn't until he woke up around 10 a.m. that he found Gover unresponsive.

"Unfortunately, a lot of violence that occurs, whether it's domestic violence or things like that, there are several cases where alcohol is involved," said Sgt. Craig Stout of the Fayetteville Police.  "It does seem to be a consistent factor in a lot of incidences that we deal with."

Police say Melton was very shaken by the incident and was visibly remorseful.
