Police found Michael Cook dead in North Little Rock Sunday.Tuesday his mother worked to prepare his funeral arrangements and warn the public about guns.
"Michael was a very good person. A very good person," says Virginia Ghere as she holds on to her final words with her first born.
"He said, I love you mom, I love you too," she says.
Hours after that exchange police found Michael Cook shot dead near the corner of Campbell and Whippoorwill Lane. Family says the shooter robbed Cook of a cell phone and car keys.
"What if it was them shot, what if it was them hurt, what has this world gotten into, " says Ghere. "These guns, these guns has got to go."
Relatives marked the street with a red ribbon, his favorite color, then rushed to fill the family porch supporting each other through the emotional and financial shock of his sudden death. In addition to his mother and siblings, he leaves behind a girlfriend and two small children.
"He used to help with with anything," says Anthony Cook, the victim's 9-year-old son.
"How are they going to live without their daddy now, my two-year-old grandson, he keeps going 'where is daddy'" says Ghere.
Cook did not leave any money to take care of them or his funeral. While relatives raise money for his arrangements their sorrow sparks a storytelling session.
"July he bought a bunch of fireworks just for her," says Cook, pointing to his grandmother.
His aunt described his love for music, "As soon as he pulled in the driveway you heard boom boom."
Together, they're gathering a playlist of his favorite songs and acting out funny moments, hoping they can create and afford a goodbye fitting for a 29-year-old.
"A part of Michael will be with me for the rest of my life," says Ghere.
Police arrested 17-year-old Robert Harris of Jacksonville for Cook's murder.
The family is raising money for his funeral through an account set up at Arvest Bank under Arvest Cares for Michael Cook.
