LITTLE ROCK, AR - Large potholes were reported on Interstate 30 and Interstate 440 in Pulaski County.

The road problems were discovered during the Monday morning rush hour.

The pothole on I-30 reportedly measured 4 feet by 4 feet and was located on an overpass in the eastbound outside (right) lane just before the airport exit onto I-440.

According to Central Arkansas Traffic on Facebook, some drivers were reporting flat tires after rolling over the pothole.

Highway crews shutdown that lane for repair work expected completed this afternoon.

"What's happening is the water is going into cracks of the pavement and as the water freezes, it expands and then it contracts and you have that constant expansion and contraction," explains Danny Straessle, spokesman for the Arkansas State Highway and Transportation Department (AHTD).

The AHTD says the salt, sand and calcium chloride used to pre-treat roads in winter weather doesn't play a role in the pothole formation process.

The I-440 pothole measured 3 x 3. It was also in one of the eastbound lanes near Faulkner Lake Road. It was also repaired by the afternoon.
