ADC to Host Annual Horse Auction this Weekend

PINE BLUFF, Ark. (News release) – Thirty-four retired horses will be up for sale at the annual Arkansas Department of Correction Horse Auction this weekend.

This year’s auction will take place at the Saline County Fairgrounds in Benton. 

The preview will be on Friday, March 9, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. On Saturday, March 10, the gates will open at 9 a.m., with the auction starting at 1 p.m.

ADC’s horse program utilizes department staff and inmate trainers to breed and train horses in support of the department’s security mission. Horses begin their training at age two and begin their active service at age four. Horses are utilized mostly by officers supervising field utility squads, regional maintenance squads, and manhunts.

The Department’s primary purpose for this auction is to ensure that its horses are able to retire with dignity after years of faithful service to the state’s prison system.
