Goal Reached! 122 Mentors Registered During 'Match Day'

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. -- More than 100 mentors were signed up to serve youth across Little Rock during the first "Mentor Match Day" on Fox16.

Fox16 and its Victory Over Violence campaign is partnering with the Little Rock School District and Big Brothers Big Sisters to match students directly with mentors. Each student involved in "Mentor Match Day" was selected by a school administrator or teacher.

Throughout the day Wednesday, volunteers called to the station and signed up to work with young people in an effort to keep them on the right track.

"We couldn't be more pleased with the result of today's effort," said Fox16 News Director Austin Kellerman. "We can't thank our viewers enough for stepping up to serve.  Studies show mentoring keeps young people moving forward in a positive direction. Today is a win for Little Rock's future."

If you weren't able to call in today, you can always click here to fill out a mentoring application.

Training for the new mentors is expected to begin in the next couple weeks.

"We also want to thank the volunteers like Robert Holt and Karen Spears who helped organize the effort and everyone who manned the phone bank," added Kellerman. "The motto for Victory Over Violence is 'be the solution.'  These folks are doing just that and leading by example."
