CONWAY, Ark. - A local woman is recovering after police say her husband set her on fire.
The Conway Police Department (CPD) says it happened about 5:30 a.m. Tuesday in the 500 block of Ash Street.
Police say a neighbor called them to report the incident. The neighbor said the 39-year-old victim showed up at their back door screaming. When help arrived, the woman was found to be badly injured with smoke coming from her body, according to a police news release issued Wednesday.
Alrick Powell, 39, is identified as the suspect in the case. Police had not yet found him as of Wednesday afternoon.
The CPD says the woman told officers she and her husband got into an argument that escalated to him beating her, putting a belt around her neck, dousing her with lighter fluid and setting her on fire.
Police say the victim managed to get in the shower to put out the fire and was able to leave the house as Powell looked for a cell phone and keys. The woman’s 22-year-old handicapped daughter was found in a back bedroom of the house as police searched for Powell. She reportedly slept through the altercation.
Powell may be traveling in a brown Marquis with factitious tags. Anyone with information on Powell’s whereabouts is urged to call the CPD Investigations Division at (501) 450-6130 or you can text an anonymous tip to CRIMES (274-637) keyword Conway and your tip.
