Inmate Enters Insanity Plea in AR Jail Officer Death

TEXARKANA, Ark. (KTAL) - The suspect accused of killing a county jail officer has pleaded not guilty by reason of mental disease or defect.

Tramell Hunter, 28, is charged with capital murder in the death of Lisa Mauldin last December inside the Miller County jail. Hunter is also charged with attacking a second jail officer.

Hunter was serving a 15-year sentence for aggravated robbery and two counts of felony domestic battery at the time of the attacks. He had been sentenced in Pulaski County in 2011.

Hunter is now being held at the Varner Supermax Unit of the Arkansas Department of Correction.

If found guilty of capital murder, Hunter faces death or life without parole.

During a court hearing Tuesday morning, the judge ordered Hunter to undergo a mental evaluation before he appears in court again.
