LONOKE COUNTY, Ark -- Dustin Chesser risked his life to save Charollette Warren and her kids after Warren's van crashed into a tree and caught fire, but things only got worse for Warren once Lonoke County Sheriff's Office deputies arrived.
Investigators said that's because Warren put her kids' lives in danger after having too much to drink.
The accident happened on Sunday, which was Mother's Day.
Chesser said he was driving home on Mount Tabor Road.
"I was coming this way," said Chesser.
When he saw Warren run off the road in her minivan and crash into a tree.
"You can see the skid marks on the road," said Chesser. "When she hit the tree ... it was pretty much over then."
Chesser turned his truck around, fearing the worst.
"She didn't make it," said Chesser.
He sprinted towards the van, where he saw its engine on fire.
"It looked bad, man," said Chesser.
Chesser said the woman was moving. So, he looked in the back of the van.
"There [were] like four little kids laying in the van," said Chesser.
He said three kids were motionless on the floor and another was in a car seat.
"I didn't know if they were alive or dead," said Chesser.
Without hesitation, Chesser used his elbow to break a window, climb inside and get everyone out.
"One of the little girl's had neck problems," said Chesser. "She was saying she couldn't move her neck."
Authorities arrived and arrested Warren. Investigators said Warren was driving her kids around with a blood alcohol level twice the legal amount.
"You see kids that didn't ask to be a situation that they are in," said Chesser. "Just help them."
Cheeser said he is no 'hero.'
"I got a 3 and 5-year-old and if something would ever happened to my kids .... I wouldn't make it," said Chesser.
He's hoping others can learn from this near-tragedy on Mother's Day.
"If there is one thing that comes out of this, it's that somebody sees this and decides not to drink and drive with their babies in the car," said Chesser.
Authorities said the kids had minor bruises. Warren is facing several charges, including endangering the welfare of a minor.
